Cats

Size:  8-11 lbs on average however, some breeds can weigh as much as 15+ lbs

Lifespan: 13-17 years. There have been domestic indoor cats recorded to be in their 30’s

Cost per year: about $600-$700

Good with kids? Kids always need to be supervised with animals. They may inadvertently mishandle or hurt the animal. Children ten and up are ready for responsibilities associated with looking after a pet.

Dogs

size: from tiny 4-pound tea cup Poodles to 3-feet-tall Irish
Wolfhounds

Lifespan: 8-16 years, depending on breed type, size, genetics & care

Cost per year: $600-$900, depending on size

Good with kids?: Young children may unwittingly mishandle or hurt puppies or small dogs, who are particularly vulnerable to injury. Children ages 6 & up can share simple pet care duties.

Great pet for older children who have learned proper handling techniques.

Size:  2 lbs to 20lbs depending on the breed

Good with Kids? Rabbits are physically delicate and require specialized veterinary care. They are not appropriate for families with small children
Fun Fact: They can be trained to use a litter box and will come when called.
