Whippet racing, a puppy parade and a pony gymkhana are among the animal delights on offer at a fundraising event at the Botanical Gardens today (Saturday).

The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals is holding its annual expo from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. SPCA president Diana Downs said the aim was to raise about $12,000 and allow supporters to find out more about the charity. “We want people to come along and see what we do and get a little closer to some of the animals,” she said.

Other attractions include a cat show, animals from the WindReach Recreational Village, dog agility, snakes, hissing cockroaches, parrots, Police sniffer dogs, stalls, tattoos and face painting. Admission is free but donations of tinned cat and dog food are welcome. Parking is $2 per vehicle and entry is via Berry Hill Road.
