The Bermuda Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals is a not for profit charity organization, that was created to assist the animals of Bermuda in living a life free of cruelty.

We accept and house animals that are no longer able to stay with their families for various reasons. We do our best to rehabilitate and rehome the animals that are surrendered to us. Often times the reasons for surrender may be alleviated through other means that the shelter may be able to provide, with proper funding.

In order to meet some of those needs, the Bermuda SPCA is creating a new type of assistance fund called: “The Care Fund”

The Bermuda SPCA already offers four types of support services:

  • Cat Snip – Cat spay and neuter funding
  • Dog Snip – Dog spay and neuter funding
  • Assistance – A “Fund” that is set up to help offset veterinary costs.
  • Food Bank -An open pantry that people are able to receive pet food from when in need.

The Bermuda SPCA also accepts animals in need of being surrendered. Often times these animals have an issue or multiple issues that need specialized assistance. Some have medical, and/or behavioral concerns. Working with behavioral experts, and veterinarians allows us to receive and then execute the most effective therapies possible. We do our best to assure the best possible outcome with each of our surrendered animals.

The Care Fund: The Basics

The Care Fund: is essentially a reimagining and rebranding of our current Assistance Fund. Many people feel ashamed to ask for a hand out, our Care Fund has been designed so that we can offer a hand-up instead.

The main objective of this fund is to help keep beloved pets with their families. Offering help in whatever way is needed by those seeking to surrender a family pet; that simply may not need to be surrendered to the shelter for various reasons. Such as the need for an enclosure, legalization, owners have fallen on hard times, the need for help with providing food for pets, temporary housing assistance, or care giving to name a few.

Owners would submit applications, there would be a review of the application and then a consultation with the appropriate staff member/s would be arranged. This process will involve a set of questions to gather information about the specific needs of the customer, as well as a general discussion. The staff member/s will make an initial assessment and give advice towards the specific needs of the customer and break down of services that would suit their needs and potential costs of those services. It is understood that some cases may be urgent and each case will be dealt with on a priority basis.

A committee entrusted with the Fund would review the information collected, then determine the appropriate amount of funding to offer. There are many scenarios and types of assistance people need. Some customers my be asked about their willingness to spay or neuter their pet, that willingness may be a factor towards the amount of funding received for their needs. Our current programs, Dog Snip and Cat Snip, are already in place to assist towards those surgeries.

The Fund is meant to be managed similarly to that of a scholarship fund or grant based program. The goal of this Fund is to keep pets in their home situations, by offering the products and services that are specific to their cases.

The Care Fund will be marketed through our social media platforms as well as mainstream media outlets. We have also created this digital information flyer for corporate company considerations.

The Synopsis

The purpose of this Fund is multidimensional. It is our hope that it will be well received by members of the community both individually as well as corporately. Donations we will receive from these groups will allow this fund to reach its maximum potential in helping those who are in need; by allowing us to listen to them and offer the support services that meet their specific needs.

It is also hoped that this will afford the Bermuda SPCA to be seen as not only a “place to drop off animals”, but as a truly caring, helpful, and beneficial pillar of the community.

This fund, along with our education programs, can only help dispel any public misconceptions about The Bermuda SPCA, as well as show just how much we are here to not only help the animals of Bermuda, but also how important is to help their families. The human-animal bond is a very important one, and understanding this bond and offering support and services to keep such a bond intact is an integral part of a healthy society.

We hope that you will see The Care Fund as a fresh new approach in helping those in need; and that you and/or your organization would like to help this fund achieve its main goal- Keeping families and their pets together.

We appreciate your time and your consideration.
