The S.P.C.A.’s Animal Expo on October 9 at the Botanical Gardens was a day of fun for all ages, especially for young children.

There were plenty of things to do and go to: there were arts and crafts, a cat show, interacting with animals in the Critter Chatter tent, a fun castle and a white elephant stall. You could even watch the parade of dogs!

One particularly interesting craft stall, was organised by the Masterworks Foundation where you could make blue bird houses out of a calabash.

or the birds: While enjoying the recent SPCA fair, Krystal Roberts and her daughter Emma decorated a calabash gourd to be used as a bluebird box.

Many children (and parents) had gathered underneath the tent to paint the calabashes in an array of colours.

The tent, which was run by a Tiffany Paynter, held a large supply of calabashes which been prepared through the kindness of Alexia Cooper and her husband.

The gourds even had holes drilled, which were the perfect size for a bluebird. Of course, you couldn’t have made a calabash birdhouse without making a cute little ping pong ball blue bird to go with it.

The S.P.C.A. Animal Expo was a great place for volunteers to lend a hand, and for families to enjoy themselves and learn more about animals.

In the Critter Chatter tent visitors could get up close and personal with parrots and tortoises, and learn a little more about these fascinating creatures.

There were a range of games, including flamingo mini-golf, beanbag toss and opportunities to test one’s strength.

The Bermuda Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals is a society dedicated to helping all kinds of animals.

They have been teaching the Bermudian community about how we can do our part to care for animals. Ever since they were founded in 1921 they have been working hard to support the animals of Bermuda and have continued to do so along with over 1000 members.

Volunteers are greatly appreciated at the S.P.C.A. which has a successful volunteer programme.

Many volunteers are relied on to help with the S.P.C.A.’s local fund-raisers, held throughout the year, and events like the Animal Expo, however, volunteers can also help walk dogs, socialise with cats and kittens, and help out at the shelter.

If you’re at least 14 years old, you can even be a junior volunteer. All it takes is an orientation and you can begin doing your part to help the animals of Bermuda.

And if you missed this year’s expo, mark it in your calendar for next year.
