Volunteers are urgently needed to help walk, clean and feed the dogs and cats at the kennels of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) in Paget.
Inspector Charles Whited said the SPCA was currently housing 24 dogs, but had a further 48 waiting to go in.
A record number of dogs, largely pit bull terrier breeds, have been confiscated by both Mr. Whited and the Government dog wardens recently.
The reasons, they claimed, were down to indiscriminate breeding, animal cruelty and dog fighting on the Island.
Mr. Whited said: “We are inundated with cats, puppies and dogs at the moment and need as much help as we can get to take care of them.” “We are looking for responsible and mature people, aged 14 upwards, who can help us on a regular basis.
“If people can spare two or three hours a week, between Monday and Friday, to feed, clean and handle the animals and to socialise with them it would be a great help.
“We can’t pay people — we need volunteers — all we ask is that they are animal lovers with time to spare.” Anybody interested should call SPCA volunteer coordinator Gill Hallard on 236-2136 between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m., or e-mail her on ghallard yibl.bm by August 4.
