Rescuers tried in vain to save a cat this afternoon after it became stranded five stories up on a crane shaft.

The animal fell during the rescue operation, which was mounted by SPCA inspector Glyn Roberts and a member of the public.

Nearby office workers said the cat could have been stranded up the structure for several days, but they had only spotted it this afternoon.

Mr Roberts rushed the cat to the vet but it died en route.
